Climbs and Grades

(HRCC, Highlands Ranch Cycling Club) I dont know how accurate they are, but seem close, enjoy:
(Boulder Climbs are towards the end)
Climbing Grades in our area measured with Handlebar-mounted Inclinometer 100% = 45 degrees of pitch.
In the ranges below, degrees roughly = 0.6 x % grade

Deer Creek Canyon
5-6% with 8-9% toward the top

High Grade Drive
5-8% up to10% in a few spots

Oehlmann Park Road from Pleasant Park
up to 9-11% in the switchbacks

City View Drive from S Turkey Creek
has a lot of 10% with 13% up the Elevator Shaft

South Turkey Creek 2-5%

High Drive
hits 10% frequently, 8-12% in the switchbacks, 10-16% up the short "wall"

Parmalee Gulch Rd
6-8% from the Kittredge side & 4-5% from the Indian Hills side

Bear Creek Canyon - Kittredge to Evergreen on Bear Creek Canyon Rd - 2-3%

Brook Forest Rd Evergreen to Conifer
3-7% with the Beast 12% and 8-10% on to the top

Squaw Pass from Bergen Park
steady grade usually 5% occasionally 6-7%. IMHO, the Beast at a long & gruntaceous 12% is the toughest of these.

Boulder County Climbs by Len Pettyjohn and using Darrel’s wicked little climbing device.
I must say I feel like smacking Darrel because he “loaned” this tool to me so I could measure some backyard pitches.
I figure my legs will recover by late summer!

Magnolia Road – Very brutal four mile section off Boulder Canyon
– Long sections at 15-17% with three switchbacks at 21%

SuperJames
– An extension of Left Hand Canyon to the west of Jamestown. The climb from Foothills Hwy to Jamestown is one of the most popular Boulder rides…with grades in the 3 to 6% range for approximately eight miles. At Jamestown, however, things change quickly…the next 1.5 miles tilt up at 6-8% and the remaining two miles are pegged at 10-12%, never dropping under 10%.

Flagstaff
– A six to seven mile climb on the south edge of Boulder starts at Broadway and Baseline. The first mile is 6-7% and then pitches up to 10-11% with a 1/3 mile section between 12-18% and even has a switchback that hits 21%.The south side of Flagstaff is no picnic either as it climbs back up from Walker Ranch…the final mile to the summit is 12-14% and has a 21% switchback.

Sunshine
– Another nice little six mile climb starts at 4th and Mapleton in Boulder. FYI, Tyler Hamilton lives near the top of Sunshine, which always leaves him with a nice workout to get home. The canyon is a very steady 10%, but has a half mile section above Poormans Road in the 13-14% range.

Olde Stage
– The Boulder side is gentle until Lee Hill intersection and then has a half mile pitch of 10-12% followed by another mile of 3-4% to the summit. The back side of Olde Stage (from Left Hand Canyon) is 1.5 miles, but the approach is 4-6% and rises to 10% for the final 1/3 to the summit.

Lee Hill North Side
– The initial one mile ramp at the base is 14-15%; the final two mile section after the switchback is 10-12%.

Lee Hill South Side
– Short steep ramps are 12-13%, but most of the climb is 9-10%.

Left Hand Canyon to Ward
– most of the 18 mile climb is 6-7%, but the final two miles are a painful 10%.

South St. Vrain Canyon
– From Lyons to Allenspark this 10 mile climb is moderate with mostly 5-6% grades and a few sections of 7%..

Boulder Canyon
– another 18 mile climb, but seldom done because of traffic it’s a pretty mellow climb at 6-7% and a steep section near Boulder Falls around 8-10%.

Coal Creek Canyon
– On the Boulder/Jefferson County boundary line this 11 mile climb is in the 6-7% range with a couple of miles near the summit around 8-10%.

(author's note)
From my perspective the two most brutal climbs are Magnolia with its four miles of leg breaking steeps and SuperJames with it’s 3.5 miles of pain. Both of these climbs come after at least five miles of 5% climbing and seem to be wall like in their intensity. After the steepest sections of Magnolia there is still 8 or 9 miles of 4-5% climbing on a dirt/gravel road. SuperJames is also followed by two miles of dirt/gravel before they come out on Peak to Peak Hwy.
